HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY GORGEOUS 13 YEAR OLD BOY!
My last born child is now a teenager. This is something he has been waiting for for a very long time, but it makes me feel officially old. Booking anything now and I have to say that we are four adults which I can’t quite cope with. How can all my children be so old? Where has the time gone?
Anyway, phew he’s not THAT old to me yet so I have loads more years with him before he flees the nest (that is presuming he can cope with living with me when his sister leaves for university next year) and I’m very happy about that. He’s great company to have around and is developing a mean sense of humour – as seen in his blog posts about Spain.
We had a really lovely birthday meal out for him where his big brother even made the effort to miss one of the 95 festivals he is going to this summer – of course it always helps to offer them the option of a gorgeous steak somewhere divine…. then they will come. They will even sing happy birthday with gusto – so we had a good turn out – his Grandmother, sister, brother and uncle.
We went to Gaucho’s, the Argentinian steak house – not at all cheap (when all your children eat adult sized portions and are pigs) but a good choice for somewhere really, really special with the family and the one in Richmond overlooks the river and has one of the most beautiful trees I’ve ever seen in the middle of their wonderful outdoor eating space. The service has always been great – I like the way you are allocated a waiter who introduces themselves and then appears at the table with a huge wooden block festooned with slabs of meat to talk us through (note that this is not a good restaurant to visit if you are not a meat eater).
The wine appears to be all Argentinian – to be honest I would like a little more choice – I haven’t found one I really like yet and they are by no means cheap. The gin and tonics on the other hand are about the best I have ever had – especially the one made with Mare gin.
We got off to a bit of bad start – when I called up to increase my booking from 5 to 6 the waiter said “no, that is not possible – you will now have to come at 9.30pm instead of 7.30pm”. When I explained that it was my son’s birthday and I couldn’t possibly delay until then and that I’d pre-warned them that the numbers might changed and that we would be delighted to squish up if necessary, he relented “well you will have to sit very close together” he said…..but in fact we were put on a table where we could have fitted even more people on which was a shame because my son wanted to take his friend and I had to decline on account of the fact that he had implied there would be a serious lack of space.
However, here we all are in a blurry photo taken by the waitress with much space around us:-
My son, mother and daughter:-
Blurry atmospheric one which was of course done on purpose:-
However, they more than made up for it at the end by providing him with a spontaneous sparkly medley of puddings which he loved and we all shared and they didn’t charge for that so perhaps they just need to work on their telephone manner:-
