My children seem to think that making their own easter eggs has become a family tradition – well, of course they do because the eggs they make are solid and far more substantial than any you can buy in the shops and consequently they get LOADS more chocolate out of the deal. I was in the supermarket with my youngest, most industrious son buying the chocolate. He had made a list for everyone involved which looked a bit like this:-

Me – Mars bar, Crunchie, Toblerone, Dairy Milk, marshmallows, biscuit
Brother – same but with Galaxy, Mars Bar and white chocolate as well
Grandma – orange smarties and chocolate
Mum – Dairy milk, marshmallows, walnuts
Cousin – marshmallows, Dairy Milk and Smarties

and so on until we had 11 people on the list for solid eggs. Which amounted to an awful lot of chocolate and an awful lot of money and when I complained and started putting stuff back he said “but MUM, you have to remember why we are doing this – Jesus DIED for us to be able to do this sort of thing……” Well. You can’t argue with that. Much. In the supermarket. With lots of other people around who might just believe he’s right…..

Although they’re a lot of fun to make, be prepared for a big mess.

Here’s how for each egg in a very vague sort of way

1. Buy moulds if you can find them – we got them from Lakelands, but in previous years have used the packaging from shop bought easter eggs.

2. Melt around 200g of the base chocolate (white/milk/dark, up to you) in the microwave for 1 minute at a time – check it and stir and put back in if necessary. This gets very hot so make sure you have assistance:-

3. If you want to make different layers of white/dark/milk/crunchie chocolate then pour the chocolate into the mould and swish it around to fill the edges and the sides. There will be a more solid base but just make sure you keep covering the sides. Put in fridge for a little while and then melt the white chocolate or any other one you choose. Or put in different bits of chocolate/biscuits/nuts/raisins of your choice at this stage.

White chocolate and Smarties:-

Marshmallows and Toblerone:-

Crunchie & melted Mars Bar:-

4. Then cover the whole lot in another layer of melted chocolate of your choice – probably 200g worth this time but hard to judge – depends what else you’ve chucked in!

5. Alternatively if you like Rocky Road like I do just mix a handful of broken walnuts and 8 marshmallows cut into quarters into the first bowl of melted chocolate and pour the whole lot into the mould and put in the fridge overnight.

6. Then you can wrap them or decorate them however you like.
