Day 3 of summer holidays, or is it day 3578? Not quite sure. Not going very well so far.

Teenage son has indeed succumbed to an overseas tattoo and I am seriously thinking about taking him for a blood test on his return. Perhaps that might give him some reasonable perspective. According to one friend, you can easily get addicted to having tattoos and never stop. He is well on his way.

Teenage daughter is, as previously mentioned trying to will herself, or persuade me to get her back to Ibiza where she clearly had the time of her life. Details emerging slowly. In the meantime, she is a pleasure to have around other than when, (although it is not her fault) she simply makes me feel old.

I vaguely mentioned I had to try and fit in seeing the hairdresser before the end of the year and she said “DEFINITELY, do you want me to call now? (grabs phone), they might have something for tomorrow, I was looking at your head from above earlier and you SO have to go immediately mum, you can’t actually walk around looking like that”.

Then I noted a skirt I liked on someone in the street and pointed out that I’d heard just over the knee was the new trendy length (the less leg the better for me, I find). “No, mum, SO not right – it’s not at all in fashion and she looks like she’s wearing an apron”.

She’s making me feel like I’m in the middle of a major fashion crisis. She’s all into see through lace tops and shorts and obviously I”m not. But then she came back from the sales with this sweatshirt with lace attachment. It’s starts off like a model in the Victoria and Albert Museum and then goes all wrong…..I don’t get it:-

and then this morning in a shoe shop when I admire some sandals she says “your feet would look disgusting in those” and I mumbled that I meant they were for her, not me, but she is showing me sandals covered in feathers that look odd – “btw, feathers are SO in atm” and I’m too busy trying to work out what “atm” stands for to care about where I’m supposed to add feathers to my attire. I even copied her by painting my toenails blue. She looks uber cool, I just look like I’ve got mouldy feet or a circulation problem or I’m in an audition for one of the tree frogs in Avatar (hideous toes picture coming up – massively cropped to remove as many unattractive bits as possible):-

Finally, on our way back from seeing my brother for dinner last night a car pulls up alongside mine at the traffic lights with some gorgeous men in – they wave at us and I wave back. “How lovely” I think to myself, can’t remember the last time that happened and she reaches across me and sticks her middle finger up at them and when I tell her not to be so rude she says “God. They’re so butters (Sp? Meaning?), don’t encourage them mum, why are you waving at them? Guys do that to us all the time in the street now, it’s revolting. Why is it you think all men are good looking?”

Revolting? Bit extreme.

Youngest son finally persuaded me to let him clean my car today for pocket money. This has taken much badgering because that sort of thing always goes wrong. Water everywhere. Streaks and smears (at best – scratches at worst). So I went through it very carefully. Use this cloth to wash it, this cloth to dry it. Bla bla. You can use the spongey bit of the pan scourer to get off the bird poo……and so on.

Two minutes later: “Mum, can you come here a minute?”

So I do.

“What do you think? Is it OK so far?”.
“Looks OK, you’ve only been at it two minutes, why?”
“What about if you stand here? Can you see that there are some scratches which I definitely didn’t just do a minute ago”.
And sure enough, when I slightly move I can see several scouring scratches where he’s rubbed off the bird poo with the green scouring pad side of the sponge, which I forgot to tell him not to do because it didn’t occur to me that he would use it.

So two minutes into the job, my car has scratches all over it and he decides it’s really boring anyway. I then spend the next half an hour trying to remove the scratch with T-something that BB told me to use. It’s made it worse.

Can’t wait for Day 4.

Eek! As an American, can I just say that the poor Ohio State sweatshirt has been vandalized?! I promise, in spite of our recent twisted love for the show “Sister Wives” and fascination with/horror at the fundamental polygamous lifestyle, we are not bringing the prairie look back into style. LOL.

Oh god, that jumper is hideous. It reminds me of an itchy lambs wool Laura Ashley monstrosity that my mother forced me to wear when I was younger…. Ugh I still hate anything that resembles a doily.

I was in Columbus, Ohio for a conference last fall, and I can assure you they’re not sporting any lace on sweatshirts there.
