Lord Mandelson has warned Kraft to expect “huge opposition” from the government if it wants to make “a fast buck” from its hostile £10bn bid for Cadbury. His comments, although pure politics, marked a government intervention that is almost unprecedented in the Britain in recent years, where ministers have tended to avoid becoming involved in take-over bids.
So he should. The Kraft bid has sparked an emotional public response, especially in Birmingham. Job losses could occur at its historic Bourneville site.
There is a “legacy” to Cadbury’s – originally a philanthropic company set up by Quakers that needs to be upheld.
This is one of our national treasures and Mr Bourneville would be turning in his grave if he knew what was going on.
