So lovely to be away from it all….just a real break. Every so often though my thoughts flit to my teenage son and how he is getting on without us all. Home Alone In London. Not good. He’s meant to be staying with his father, but I am quite sure he’s going to manipulate a few nights at my house, sans any adults to be found. Which means, obviously that I try and direct my thoughts on to something else, less worrying as often as possible.

He’s just finished his week of work experience with my brother. A huge success by all accounts and one that has increased his desire to do medicine at university. Judging by the following email he sent me it is clear that he prefers the immediacy of surgery to some of the other areas of medicine and don’t be fooled by the slight sense of being underwhelmed – this is as enthusiastic as I have ever heard him be and certainly the longest email I have ever had from him about anything:-

“Re: Woooo!

Alrite mum!
Having a good time, leaving tonight though.
On monday morning I was with the orthopaedic surgeons and saw 4 surgeries. One was removing part of the radial head, one was a knee replacement, one a shoulder replacement and the other removal of a bunion from the foot. The guy I was shadowing knows they guy who’s doing my shoulder surgery! In the afternoon I was in orthopaedic clinic which was alriite nothing special though.
Tuesday morning I was with G and he told me lots about what he does and I went to clinic with him. In the afternoon I was with the oncology team which deal with cancer. So I was in one of their team meetings and then I had to follow round this guy giving reaally bad news to families. One guy had a brain scan and he has multiple tumours in his brain meaning he only has days to live and I had to watch this guy telling the wife of this man 🙁
Wednesday morning I was in theatre again watching removal of the gall bladder and gall stones which was pretty interesting and in the afternoon I was at EAU (emergency assessment unit) where I was with the junior doctors but that was pretty boring.
Today I’m at a haemotology meeting with G and then in surgery the afternoon.
Hope you’re having a niice time. Is it sunny? Also me and dad are going to be looking for a car next week so by the time you’re back I may have one!
Miss you xx”

“Great News!” I emailed back. Need you to become a bunion specialist ASAP and then I can be your first patient”.

Trying to ignore the news that he is about to buy a car with his dad. Nightmare.

Try to remember you might not always win. Several days, the most artistic individual is likely to taste defeat. There is, however,, in this case, always the next day – right after you have done all you could to get success today.

Many thanks for taking a few minutes to debate this, Personally i think strongly over it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, while you gain expertise, does one mind updating your website with extra information? It is extremely ideal for me.
