I’m in my new house! Hooray! Worked hard all weekend to build things and the kids arrived last night, but were disappointed that it wasn’t more ready. Still, it’s lovely to finally be here even if nothing really works and we’re covered in dust.

We’ve all been a bit stressy, but it’s not particularly surprising … we couldn’t find much of any use this morning, namely school uniform, lunch boxes, swimming goggles. Most dramatic was the fact that my 7 year old couldn’t lay his hands on any hair gel “you have just ruined my day”, he shouts at anyone in general. I drove my daughter to school after her hissy fit because her brother had used her shampoo “it clearly states on the bottle that it is only to be used by people with hair long enough to swish and you DO NOT have swishy hair”. Just as we got to her school came tantrum number two because she was wearing my Ugg Boots instead of her school shoes. I tried to get her into the school, but there was no way, it would have been too mortifying for her, so we drove back home, which meant that I was then very late for my 7 year old. The headmistress called me into her office to discuss his progress. “Well, basically he is not progressing nearly as quickly as we’d like”. Oh dear. We’re going to see if having a “proper” house to live in will make a difference, but I’m pretty sure it won’t. We’ll see.

Nothing properly works yet, but it feels good. I was worried that I’d suddenly want to immediately rebel against suburbia and all it entails, but I think I have shaken my life up enough for the moment. I haven’t been a key player in the bosom of suburban life for nearly five years now and have I missed it? Not one bit. I’ve saved the parts I wanted and have let go of the rest. I just have to remain focused and think of an excuse if anybody asks me to join the PTA or go to a quiz night.

It’s my daughters 12th birthday tomorrow. We’re going ahead with the surprise party even though she’s now seen her room – nevermind, her friends will make it special. .
