My teenage son had his operation today to “manipulate” his nose back to it’s rightful place. I had to get him there for 7.30am which meant I had to cancel my classes and make alternative arrangements for the other kids to get to school (thank you lovely friend). But. Here is another example of the harsh reality of suddenly having an overnight adult. We sat in the waiting room together. I resisted the urge to hold his hand (mainly because he would have hit me) and then the nurse came and said “OK, I’ll take him now. See you in about 4 hours” and I thought, but I’m here now, I’ve bloody cancelled my day – I’m not going to sit down here in the waiting room by myself all that time. She said “well he is 18 now and able to make his own decisions” and I was thinking “I KNOW THAT. BUT HE’S STILL MY CHILD AND I’VE TAKEN THE DAY OFF -let me have my moment of maternal concern – I’m not allowed to use it very often anymore (unless you include handing out money)”. She took pity on me and let me come upstairs and I sat in a horrid cubicle for four hours instead with poor little children just back from having their tonsils removed which was highly traumatic.

Anyway, once he was wheeled away it didn’t take long. He was back and asking for morphine within minutes – not because he was in any pain – just fancied some morphine. The surgeon said he didn’t think it was fully back in place but he’d done what he could and if he wanted a better job he’d have to go for the full rhinoplasty op. I agreed it was certainly better, but not perfect.

Here was the original injury of 10 days ago:-

Here it is today – not sure whether his skin tone of whiter shade of pale green is because of the anaesthetic or my camera:-

We had several conversations about it when we got home. He felt there were weird bumps and I agreed. It’s definitely not right. It looks all mishapen, but nevermind – “it gives you some character” we agreed. No doubt he’ll break it again when he plays sport at university anyway.

So all is well. Although to make the comparison, I’ve just found a picture of his nose before anything happened and I’m not sure it was that beautiful to start with. I can’t actually tell if it’s gone back to how it was or not. Looks like they’ve stuck on somebody else’s nose entirely. He’s definitely gone from swinging to the left to now swinging to the right…

A man is definitely more attractive with a bit of ‘character’ – you can quote me on that one!

I had laser eye surgery on Friday and, given that I’ll soon be off to dangerous and far away places, allowed my mother to come and stay for some full-scale ‘mothering’. She loved it. And I was grateful. Give it a few years and he’ll be yearning for a bit of looking-after!

Aaah. Thanks Mud, now I feel better – I didn’t think there was a time when mother’s were made completely redundant – but more importantly did your eye surgery work? Lx

Everything’s still a little fuzzy and gritty – but I think I’m getting there!

Hope the nose isn’t too sore.

still looks a bit swollen, I’d see how it is in a few days. All the same, I stick with my original character building comment. The rugged look is a good one 🙂

Rugged is definitely good! And, even at my aged 36-years, if I’m ever feeling sick the first person I phone is my mum, and my first request is for her spaghetti bolognaise… Hope he enjoyed the morphine xx
