How sad. I have just been to my teenage son’s LAST parent teacher meeting tonight at his school.
I’ve been talking to his teachers for about 14 years – I started off having to talk to one – his nursery school teacher and then had to talk to millions of them at the same time during GCSE’s and now it’s been reduced back down to three subjects only – six teachers.
All good. He seems to be on track. I really struggle though to concentrate on what they are saying. Things barely make any sense. I don’t know whether it’s because the three subjects he is doing for AS level were my worst ones and I never understood them (Maths, Biology and Chemistry) OR that I have lost so many brain cells over the years I simply can’t relate to anything a teacher has to say.
Mostly, I didn’t understand what they were talking about – different modules and maths equations and chemistry formulae and so on and I only had one question to answer the whole time I was there and that was “Which road do you live in?” asked by a professor of Biology and guess what I said? I completely fucked up the answer – said I lived in an entirely different road – one two roads away from me – which at least began with the same letter, but apart from that – HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? My son looked horrifed “NO WE DON’T LIVE IN THAT ROAD” he said and I had to go “oh yes, sorry, you’re right, what was I thinking……”
What an idiot.
How I have managed to produce clever children I have no idea. (Builder Bloke has just read this and says it is nothing to do with me – it’s my ex husband’s genes – which I object to – obviously).

February 7, 2011At least you are not one of those pompous know-it-all parents who don’t even let their children open their mouths, let alone determine their own future. You are comfortable with who you are and you let your son be who he is – that’s the best gift you can give him.

February 7, 2011I’m having all sorts of “last” experiences too, with the Queenager. OMG this is the last Xmas performance, where the seniors do terrible skits of the 12 Days of Xmas, which are so full of in-jokes that not even the parents understand them.
Or, next week may be the last February ski trip she does with us as a family because her college will be on a different schedule. Or, ……..sniff…..

February 8, 2011Love it! I always feel as though I’m going to be told off for not giving in my homework at parents evenings ….residual guilt methinks!

February 9, 2011Teachers are born with the ability to make you feel stupid !!!! Either that or they receive it as a secret power with their cap and gown when they graduate. I have a friend who teaches in my daughters school , socially we’re great together , we laugh , we get drunk tell dirty jokes together etc but the minute we assume the cloaks of parent and teacher in a school setting , we both change – I lose all my brain cells and she becomes patronising !!!!!

February 9, 2011Hmmm. Yes I can see that happening – perhaps there is a certain breed of person that chooses to be in education – it’s definitely not my thing. Makes me feel IMMENSELY stupid! Lx
