My daughter had her school prom last night. Odd. Not something I had as a teenager – more the school disco where the guy you fancied ended up snogging somebody else on the dance floor.

Yet another American import it seems we can do nothing about. Luckily it’s not all corsages and limo’s and blokes turning up on the doorstep to escort inappropriately dressed for their age daughter’s to the ball (yet)….more a group of friends messing around with clothing disasters, false eyelashes, hours of hair and make-up preparation, safety pins, slightly dodgy fake tans, lots of laughter and a token glass of champagne I gave them when they were feeling very grown up and looked beautiful. The girls have been planning for months. They even have a Facebook page so all of them can upload the dress they are going to wear so that nobody ever has to turn up wearing the wrong style dress or indeed the same dress again!

Personally, I quite like the idea. As long as it’s not prohibitively expensive – I like that they’ve been talking about it for ages and that they had to find a partner from school. It brings them all together a little more – I’m quite sure the boys have found the whole thing a terrifying experience – receiving that “do u want to ask me to the prom” text because they’ve been too scared to ask in the first place….they’ve had so much fun preparing for it I bet the whole thing was a little bit of a disappointment.

But hey, that’s life….(says the cynical old bird in the corner):-

I haven’t asked my daughter and her friends if I can post a photo yet – they will need to give their approval – so in the meantime – here is the general idea:-

Judging by the fact No 1 Son arrived home from his prom at 2am, I’m guessing he had a pretty good time too 🙂

Do I ever remember the school discos and the watching from the sidelines as the guy of my fancy is dancing cheek to cheek with somebody else. Thank you for bringing that vivid picture back to mind.
Sounds like the prom version is less about heart breaking and vanishing confidence and more about girls having fun and celebrating who they are. Kudos to that!
