I had an extremely proud parent moment on Friday night at my teenage son’s U16 end of season football presentation night. His team have been playing together since they were 5. They are all at different schools and lead very different lives but they are such a lovely group of boys with a very close bond.
The evening was held upstairs in a local pub. Many of the boys brought their girlfriends and lots of other mates so we found ourselves surrounded by a multitude of gorgeous young things exposing a lot of flesh.
For the first time in the 10 years they’ve been together they won their league. Which was a major achievement. My son, who is the captain collected the trophy on the team’s behalf.
Then, on to the individual awards, of which there were four. Sportsmanship, Manager’s player, Team player and Most improved Player. How proud was I that all were in agreement that my son should get the newly introduced “Sportsmanship” award.
At the end of the evening, I waved to say goodbye -I didn’t want to embarrass him and he called me over and gave me a huge rib-crushing bear hug and a kiss IN FRONT OF ALL HIS FRIENDS.
I was so puffed up with pride until another bloke pointed out that he was probably only doing it to impress all the girls – “they all like a boy who loves his mum” he said, slightly bursting my bubble. BUT STILL. I was pleased.
