I feel bad. I did a post a while ago with a spoof Reading Festival lineup including a selection of dreadful bands and it’s now getting a large amount of hits as the real lineup is announced and everyone wants to see who is playing.

So. Just to set the record straight – I will attach the real lineup. I asked my daughter about it yesterday – she told me who was playing. “Florence and The Machine? GREAT I love them, Kasabian? COOL, Foo Fighters? The Kaiser Chiefs? Great I’ve got their album – my friend calls them The Kaiser Chefs…Bombay Bicycle Club? Yup. Heard of them. The Vaccines? Who? Cancer Bats? Are they related to Vaccines? ha ha, Blood Red Shoes? Medical Theme going on?” and so I trailed off as the bands got less and less familiar in an attempt to stop whilst I was clearly not ahead. Although one coup for me (if this is some sort of sad competition that I am really too old to be engaging in) was that she has only recently discovered the Foster The People song “Pumped up kicks” (although I have to admit I thought it was Pumped up Kids) and I posted that song on my blog like way a long time ago like maybe even like half way through like last year!!!!! How cool is that – I even managed to say things like “haven’t you heard the David Guetta (sp) club remix??? REALLY? How did you miss that?”.

“It’s all Indie stuff” she said – “OH I LOVE Indie stuff” I announced, “maybe I should have your ticket and go instead because you only like Olly Murs” I said. And I got one of those looks. “You don’t know anything about Indie” she told me. “Your taste is more mainstream old person stuff”.

HOW INSULTING. I used to work for a record company. I know about music…..

But clearly not any more. The Brits were enough of an insight to know that I no longer have my finger on the pulse (if I ever did). So what is to be done? Time to dust off the old records and start educating my children in music I should not have abandoned?

Not sure. Anyway, Gregory Isaacs and Bob Marley and The Doors were always my favourite so perhaps I’ll start doing a reggae thing and maybe get some dreadlocks.

Anyway, it has therefore come to my notice that I am a fickle music person. Same with Fashion. I prefer to by a whole load of cheap stuff that falls apart in time for the next season. I am not very good with “good quality” items because they last too long and then I have to wear the wrong thing the next winter – brown instead of black or long instead of short (not that I know what I’m supposed to wearing) and it has come to my attention that perhaps this sums up a specific personality type.

I have friends (OK mostly male) who insist on playing their old Led Zep or Dire Straits or Meatloaf or – basically nothing newer than last century to their children on a regular basis. To. Educate. Them. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Should we be teaching our children about the past or moving forward with them?

I DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER NOW. I want her Reading ticket and I want to camp (if it’s a camper van with proper glasses and a loo and no mud) but I also want to listen to Elvis Presley.

But I don’t want to be fickle.

Obviously.

AAAAGH.

I’m so feckin’ with-it I called the Foo Fighters the Foo-foo Fighters the other day. Even my husband (an accountant) fell about laughing! Facepalm.
