Finally we have been sparked into action. It is just tragic that it had to be prompted by a photograph of a limp child in the arms of a Turkish policeman – three-year-old Aylan, drowned as he tried to escape violence in Syria, but if it is this sad personal story – of a father who lost not only Aylan, but his other son and his wife that has started to shift the debate then at least we can hope that the human tragedy thus far denied shelter at our borders is going to be resolved.
It is time to stop talking and starting acting. Time to stand together to say that Britain should offer immediate sanctuary to families fleeing war and terror.
A number of councils in the UK have already said they will each welcome some refugee families and town halls are getting involved as well as private landlords offering space. More will hopefully follow as pressure mounts.
The UK must accept responsibility and offer sanctuary to more refugees. The latest statement by the Prime Minister is a little more positive but still not enough and things need to start happening RIGHT NOW. Stop procrastinating – this is a monumental disaster and European leaders have failed so far to provide safe routes for those fleeing war and persecution – the world’s biggest refugee crisis – the worst since World War II and we must do more.
For far too long UK and European leaders have ignored the situation and the magnitude of the problem. More than that so has the rest of the world. This has become a global issue so why can’t America and other countries step in to help as well?
There is a march happening in London on the 12th September. 30,000 of us are expected to attend. I suspect the numbers will swell now people have been touched….see you there?
