We went to the most lovely wedding yesterday. My ex-sister-in-law got married for the second time to a lovely man. It was so emotional. Just wonderful to see her so happy after everything she’s been through.
She and I were married to brother’s who both did the same thing – made their vows and then broke them. She was utterly devastated when it all happened and we have remained firm friends and a support to each other over the years. We very often got together on a Sunday evening with all the children for our dysfunctional family unions because all the cousins get on so well.
I cried all the way through the service. She has married a man whose wife died, leaving him with their two young children. Her sister was there and various other family members. It must have been a very hard day for them. His daughter was a bridesmaid – she also found it very emotional, but I was standing behind my niece, (also a bridesmaid) and I could see them both shaking and I watched the two new step-sisters hold hands and get each other through it.
The bride couldn’t have looked more radiant – she was wearing a very elegant, long, simple, pale pink dress. The reception was held at the Bingham Hotel in Richmond – just a divine setting – so romantic – overlooking the river. Just great.
The speeches, as you can imagine made everybody cry again. Her 18 year old son made a speech she wasn’t expecting – a just from the heart thank you for everything you have done for us sort of speech, which made me cry my eyes out.
Here is a picture of the groom holding his father’s hand, whilst he made his speech, which I think sums up all the emotion perfectly:-
My beautiful niece and daughter looking like China Dolls:-
There was lots of dancing and silliness (by me, obviously). Builder Bloke was there with me and it was very, very special. There was a chocolate fountain instead of a wedding cake (which, I suspect was the reason why my 10 year old vomited all over his bed at 3am this morning).
The six cousins have now seen three out of their four parents get married in the last year. Been to three big weddings. It’s a lot for them to have all been through. No pressure for me then!
