Today at midnight same sex marriages in England and Wales will be permitted to go ahead. Culture Secretary Maria Miller made the announcement on the 10th December last year when the coalition legalised it. Civil partnerships have been permitted since 2005, but of course this is different and I had no idea that we didn’t already have legal same sex marriage in the UK. How backward looking of us. This will of course be a big deal for a lot of people. It’s been a massive religious issue within the Church of England who essentially argue that it would weaken the “family”.

I wonder what their definition of “family” is? No doubt a mother, father and 2.1 children. A dying breed. Can anyone really argue in this day and age that having two loving parents of the same sex is any worse than a heterosexual couple who are not getting on? I really do find religious judgements about how other people choose to live their life quite extraordinary.

Live and let live and for those of you who will be the first to get married – WOOHOO – I hope you have a fabulous party and love every minute.

But don’t you think this is all a bit ‘cack-handed’….(whatever that actually means)? So ‘The Gays’ can now have a Civil Partnership, or get Married. Fair enough, although I’m not sure I really understand the difference… ‘The Straights’ can get Married, or…well, get married…..
So now we are all equal – but ‘the gays’ are more equal than the rest?
I just think it’s all been done wrong and for the sake of PC. It’s been rushed through to look all lovely and Liberal – or should that have a small ‘l’, without dealing with the much larger issues around gender and sexual equality. Another Conservative/Coalition cock-up.

That’s an interesting opinion from you – if you’re straight you can have a civil partnership can’t you? I don’t know anymore it’s all a bit confusing as you say, but guess as that was there before it has just been evened out. It may well be a voting issue, but I am surprised it wasn’t legal to get married years ago aren’t you? Lx

No, that’s my point – Civil Partnerships are not available for straight relationships; google it and you’ll find all the arguments for/against. And no,
I’m not surprised it has taken so long for same sex marriages….. The ‘establishment’ certainly didn’t really want it even now…it is indeed just a vote thing. It hasn’t been ‘evened out’ – same sex partners have a choice – everyone else gets one option only…Bonkers!
