Ten years before his death Sir John Betjeman wrote a great poem:

THE LAST LAUGH (1974)

I made hay while the sun shone,
My work sold.
Now, if the harvest is over
Give me the bonus of laughter,
As I lose hold.

That is the answer. Keep your sense of humour, till death do us part.
