Saw a brilliant play on Friday night at one of my favourite venues – the small and intimate Donmar Theatre in Covent Garden. You are always guaranteed to be standing next to a few lovies during the interval – in our case it was Catherine Tate and lots of her actor friends.
It was a new play by Nick Payne (of “Constellations” fame), set in a boring old office in Luton with not a great deal happening but some fantastic acting that turned it into a gritty drama that was very enjoyable to watch. Not a very sexy play but a social comedy about the rise of the “no win, no fee” fraud game. Nigel Lindsay played a world worn widower trying to make an honest living and Daniel Mays played his young side-kick struggling to make a living any old way.
In a funny way it was quite a romantic love story, set in the back drop of modern day Britain with all the difficult choices that have to be made just to keep going. Mark Whooton was brilliant as a devious chav who basically knew his wife was in love with somebody else….
That’s all I’m going to say on the matter as the play finishes very soon and you probably won’t get a chance to see it now.
