Today marks the 19th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests and the violent crackdown in China, involving army tanks rolling over a peaceful demonstration of mainly students. Mothers are still seeking answers and justice for their children. There is still no full, independent and impartial investigation into the crackdown and Amnesty International has records of people who are still imprisoned or on medical parole for their activities in connection with the 1989 protest.
My parents were still living in Hong Kong at the time. Even they went on the march through the streets of Central to protest against the violent slaughter of innocent people. I remember that harrowing footage as clearly as if it was yesterday.
Lets hope that with the looming olympics, China’s human rights record improves dramatically.
