Currys and Toshiba are currently hosting a blogging competition, giving us a chance to win a pair of Quarter-final Rugby World Cup tickets for the Twickenham match on 18th October.
To enter, you have to post a blog about your favourite moment from any rugby world cup, past or present. That could be Jonny Wilkinson’s drop goal in 2003, or Ireland’s shock victory over Australia in 2011. Best post, decided by Toshiba will win the tickets!
So here’s our entry:-
Without doubt our favourite moment from any rugby world cup, past or present was the momentous occasion when South Africa hosted and won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. It was the first major sporting event to take place in South Africa following the end of apartheid and therefore was the first World Cup in which South Africa was allowed to compete. It was also the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country.
In the final, held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 24 June, South Africa defeated New Zealand 15 – 12, with Joel Stransky scoring a drop goal in extra time to win the match. Following their incredible victory, Nelson Mandela came on, wearing a Springboks rugby shirt and cap to present the World Cup Trophy to the South Africa captain, Francois Pienaar. A racially divided country was united and Nelson Mandela handing over the trophy symbolised the Rainbow nation (a term coined by Desmond Tutu in 1994) that the country had become.
