I had my VERY first experience of Wimbledon earlier this week. Thanks to a lovely friend of mine with the equivalent of a backstage pass to the great and the good (and mainly the strawberries and cream tea in the Members Enclosure), I shall never be able to go again. Because I hit the pinnacle of my Wimbledon experience on day one and it just won’t be that good again. I loved every minute.
I was there with brilliant seats in Centre Court to see Andy Murray take his first serve of the season and beat a very determined young player called David Goffin from Belgium. I don’t know much about tennis and hadn’t paid much attention – how did I get to my age before realising the pleasure of watching the finest Gluteus Maximus’s on the planet move about for hours on end? Mon dieu. I have a lot of catching up to do.
The people watching, lots of famous people in the crowd, including the legendary Jackie Stewart, the silence, the clapping, the sounds, the organisational skills and commitment of the ball “kids” (as apparently they are soon to be known), the colours, the soporific sense of wonder, the Pimms, the power of the ball, the power of the umpire, the awe and fascination of seeing them up close and personal – is his right shoulder and forearm really twice as big as his left? Why are her laces so long? How many strange little rituals do they have to go through before every serve? Interesting.
So here are my pictures of the day: Andy Murray in action:-
Order of the day and excited – a little bit early:-

The centre court overview with my wide angle lens:-

His first serve of the season:-
A sneaky peak at Roger Federer over lunch:-
Djokovic’s manager – the legendary Boris Becker:-
The reason why his arse is so impressive – the Djok Squat ought to become an exercise video for toned Gluteus Maximus/Medius and Minimus:-
Over-excited me and a bowl of strawberries:-
The gorgeous creatures themselves:-

And then home….

June 28, 2014I used to go to Wimbers regularly when I lived in London – I lived in Parsons Green, Fulham, so SW19 was just round the corner, but I haven’t been for ages. Actually decades as I’ve lived in Paris since 1992. I have been to Roland Garros on various occasions with my wife and kids, and it’s great but it’s not quite the same as the green grass of Wimbledon. Ah, happy days!
