Boyhood is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen and I can’t stop thinking about it. Shot over 12 years by Richard Linklater it was a massive task because he used the same actors – starting as children around the age of six and ending when they were 18 it is a haunting reminder of how time literally flies. What a vision he had. For me, as a mother who is about to lose a second child to the big wide world it was deeply moving and poignant. Even more so as a single mother it resonated. The whole idea that we all go through different phases that can cause wide divides at certain times of life and not at others – “what’s the point” asked the chief protagonist at one stage and I could see exactly what he meant – we are all trying to do the best we can with what we have at the time. A live for the moment message resonated as did the mother’s distress at the end when she said “I thought there’d be more.” You don’t even have to question what she meant by that – just more of everything – especially time.
Anyway, I won’t spoil it for you. Just go and see it if you can.
