FOOTBALL HAS GONE MAD.
Chelsea have broken the British transfer record by paying a reported £50m to seal the capture of striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool. The signing of the 26 year old Spaniard was pushed through shortly before the transfer deadline of midnight last night and came on a dramatic day, with Chelsea and Liverpool involved in the four biggest transfers of the day. Whilst he has the record for the quickest 50 goals ever scored, Liverpool who have lost him will not be happy to discover the reason for his dreadful form of late is more to do with the fact he was moving on (2010-11 season, scoring only nine goals in 26 games).
The reality is that he will get £155K PER WEEK and with everything else that has to be added on it will cost Abramovich more like £100m in total just FOR ONE HUMAN BEING.
So Chelsea spent £75m yesterday but are £71m in debt. Is this responsible in our time of austerity?
I know we are all told all the time that you can’t compare third world debt and world tragedies and lack of water, vaccinations and food and unacceptable death rates to many many of our fellow human beings in other parts of the world – to this sort of level of money – I know we are told this sort of money generates income, jobs, that this is our culture, that this is sport, that this is, that this is…..
That. This. Is.
That this is unacceptable. How is it allowed to happen? I know you can’t compare, but I drew this picture when I was 16 and at times like this, it just leaps into my mind. Can’t think why:-
