Yesterday I went to watch a polo match. How posh is that? I’ve never been to a polo game before and a very well-connected friend invited me to watch a match for the Asia Cup. Both England and India were fielding teams and the event is part of the Celebrasian Festival (which when you say the word sounds rather more unappealing than it ought to). The Maharaja of Jodhpur is the official patron of the Asia cup and Her Highness The Rajmata of Jaipur (the unofficial Queen mother) was meant to be there to present the award, but she wasn’t able to attend. She’s very old now. Interestingly, she was the 3rd Maharani of Jaipur through marriage and after Independence day in India she ran for parliament and won her constituency by the largest landslide victory in the world (confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records).

I of course was looking forward to having an entire team of gorgeous Jilly Cooper-esque hunks with strong thigh muscles and flowing locks to choose my future husband from. It was incredibly exciting to watch – fast and dangerous.

oohh what wonderful memories, the thought of hitting balls with mallets, oh sorry that was my ex’s balls I was thinking about. Seriously though “POLO” why are the riders covered in protection and the ponies have nothing but leg bandages. I’ll leave it there coz I could start a rant on animal welfare, but I won’t. Don’t forget to collect your award. Debs x

You are so right – there didn’t seem nearly enough protection for the horses – they should have had helmets too. Lx
