A fellow blogger (The Mother of This Lot) had a funny post about lies parents tell their children. It included many that I believed for years…

“You can’t go swimming for at least an hour after food because you’ll get cramp and drown” (normally told to us by a hoard of parents drinking gin and tonics and smoking cigarettes after a curry on a boat in Hong Kong, whilst all of us kids were desperate to jump off the top deck).

“Don’t make that face, if the wind changes, you’ll stay like it forever”

“Eat your crusts, it will give you hairs on your chest” (this one proved to be true)

“Eat your carrots, you’ll be able to see in the dark”

Apart from the obvious ones about Christmas and teeth (said in code should any inappropriately small children be prematurely devastated), I’ve managed to pretty much stick to the truth. I’ve never been able to go as far as the Easter bunny….but there is one that if I thought I could get away with it, I would and that is”

“Wine makes mummy clever”.

Maybe I should put them straight on that one soon, otherwise they might start adding to the statistics that have allowed us to overtake Russia in the national drinking stakes.

My brother bought me ‘Loads more lies to tell small kids’ by Andy Riley. It’s hysterical – if you shove uncooked spaghetti down the telephone receiver it’ll shoot in your friend’s ear!
Love the blog – have greatest respect for divorcees juggling life’s balls!
