Happy Mothering Sunday to you all.

I always find the whole concept a little bit hard simply because there are so many people in the world who really don’t want to be reminded that it’s Mother’s Day. Maybe they don’t know who their mother’s are or they don’t have their mother around anymore or they bloody hate their mother’s. It must also be incredibly painful for those women who are not (for whatever reason) mother’s themselves when they desperately wanted to be (punctuation police will be having a field day with that paragraph).

My children have been entirely predictable, with each of my children performing as expected in the amount of thought and effort stakes.  I am wallowing in the love of my children on this enforced you have to love your mother day.

I was woken at 8.30am by my youngest child with this:-

Breakfast in bed on a tray and a tablemat, tea made in a “Yummy Mummy” mug he’d bought me. A pink rose. Some new lipstick. Some Rococo chocolates because he knows they’re my favourites and a croissant with jam he’d been to buy himself. Unbelievable. He had to borrow money from me (major pocket money advance) but he is just SO thoughtful and generous and kind it’s ridiculous. Oh and I forgot a pink helium balloon too.

An hour later my gorgeous daughter starts creating yet more breakfast downstairs and a beautiful homemade card with a homemade voucher in saying that she’s going to take me on a girly trip to The Wolsey for coffee…..bit posh isn’t it? For a 14 year old, to be taking her mother there….but she knows I love it. So happy to go with it. I’ll no doubt have to sub that too but it’s the thought that counts.

Enter third and largest child to join us for breakfast with a card he’s made within the last two minutes. “What??” he says when the other two ask where his present is “isn’t it enough that I love her?” ANYWAY, I bought her a very special present home last night on the bus – you can have it mum, it’s for you, I found it and carried it miles……”:-

Great. Will have to make him put it back under cover of darkness. He’s very lucky he didn’t get arrested. Although maybe it’s a better life message for me to have on the wall that “Keep Calm And Carry On”.  It’s kind of how my life has panned out.  Unexpectedly “Road Ahead Closed.  Please take detour.  Try this way.  No.  Sorry.  Fuck up ahead.  Builders in the way.  Go back to the beginning and go right instead.  Now go round and round in circles until you feel a little bit dizzy then fall over.  Now double back AND GET A BLOODY SAT NAV for the future”.

In other words, take the path less travelled….

Granted, it wasn’t the best sign he could have picked up. “No honking, fine $350” – we just saw it everywhere in New York’s west side – would have been a bit better.

Our girls made a fair effort at cooking sunday dinner for their mother, only fair as they seemed to lose interest towards the later parts of the process!

The youngest made her mother a nice little card.

At dinner, The Children’s Mother’s Son, having torn himself away from car for five minutes, saw the card and asked.

“Uhh, is that from all of us then?”

Bit of work needed there I think….
