It’s not often that I comment on individual items in the news, but the murder of Angela Wrightson in December 2014 is something that needs to be highlighted because it is one of the most horrific crimes I have ever heard about and sickened and shocked me to the core. I cannot imagine how hard it must be for her family or indeed for the jury to have had to listen to the evidence and it doesn’t seem to be getting much media coverage although I’m not entirely sure why. If two boys had done this we would be up in arms, but the fact that it was two girls makes it feel somehow even worse and I’m not sure if I can even explain why I feel like that.

Angela was a 39 year old alcoholic, living on her own. She obviously trusted the two girls, as she’d been to buy them alcohol in the past and clearly let them into her home. They were only aged 13 and 14 at the time that they subjected her to five hours of horror in which they tortured her and inflicted more than 100 wounds using a multitude of different weapons including chairs, glass and fire. Not only was the attack brutal and sustained but they uploaded details on Facebook and posted images to Snapchat.

What on earth is going on in the world when two young girls can be so savage and then laugh about it?

They are awaiting their sentence. I hope they will go down for a very, very long time. Even if they were high on drugs, we need to question what was going on in their world to make them want to inflict such pain and suffering on a defenceless woman.

Truly beyond comprehension.

Couldn’t agree with you more, this is truly dreadful. What I found just as disturbing was the report on the BBC I heard, that one of the girls, had earlier that day visited her own mother who, gave her strong Cider and Paracetamol and told her to “F off and kill herself”….. (apparently). What sort of woman does/says that?. what sort of society are we living in that creates women that would say/do that sort of thing – let alone to her own daughter! – ? I am almost tempted to suggest that forced sterilisation might be a good thing…..these girls will (probably) go on to have disturbed lives and so the wheel will continue to turn. This cannot be the way forward for society; at some stage a line has to be drawn. It is interesting to read the statistics of youngsters that we lock up in this country against the numbers for the rest of Europe; another topic agreed but allied to and important to, stories of this nature.
