I was SO delighted to be invited by my oldest friend to a book evening called “Girls Night Out” earlier this week to hear David Nicholls talk about how he writes his novels. He was on a panel with Penny Vincenzi and Harriet Evans – the printed tickets amused me – not easy to know who the mystery guest was going to be as they’d only printed “David”:-
Having written a review of “One Day” by David Nicholls a while ago, where I commented that it would make a good film it wasn’t very surprising to hear the film is being made at the moment. I asked him how much involvement he had in the making of the film – it’s starring Anne Hathaway as Emma and Jim Sturgess as Dexter – he had an unusual amount of involvement for a novelist given that he wrote the screenplay. It was just so interesting listening to how he put his books together. He said that he had decided on the ending right at the beginning (not great for the US market I wouldn’t have thought?) and it was funny that his approach was so completely different to the way Penny Vincenzi works – seemingly she might wake up one morning only to realise that one of her characters is going to be in a plane crash, or suddenly turn into the villain…..
Anyway, I was very pleased because he signed my copy AND I had a chat with him about some mutual friends and therefore I was very upset to subsequently get a text from my ex husband saying that I shouldn’t have gone out because our youngest son needed help with his homework (I did have a babysitter who was helping) and that “you’re obviously too busy at your pseudo literati evenings” WTF??? Why does he feel the need to be so rude?

October 8, 2010LOL…lm sitting here with it by my side..Moannie/Mum recommended it to me, telling me that it would be heartwarming for me…after Eat pray love..which was wonderful. hard to read in places…this is my 2nd book of the year…I who usually gobbles 1 or 2 a week….loving it so far..
It reads a brit book/film, though anne hathaway is good with the brit accent, hope it isnt americanized!!

October 9, 2010I’m so incredibly jealous! I loved One Day, and am looking forward to the film. Though I once introduced Penny Vincenzi at a lunch event in Brisbane in 1997 which was a highlight. I remember being amazed at her story and hoping that one day I could write best-selling books as she has done.
