“Sounds like we might all have a really crap day tomorrow, I don’t like those odds”, I said to my daughter as she alarmingly explained that tomorrow evening the world’s largest machine was going to be turned on by scientists somewhere near the arctic circle. She told me that they had learnt about it at school today. “If it goes well they will learn loads of new stuff about the world, like when everything is all going to end (do I want to know that?), BUT there is a 2% chance that it will go badly wrong and the whole universe will get sucked into a black hole”.
However, my 15 year old has reassured me that “The Large Hadron (oops I just got the ‘r’ and the ‘d’ the wrong way round, not good) Collider – an “atom smasher” will beam sub-atomic particles around a huge tunnel beneath the Swiss-French border. “2%!! Don’t be so stupid. The odds are 50 million to one which is the same odds as winning the lottery – so we’ll be fine” he said. PHEW!!

September 9, 2008I just hope that everyone’s been using metric to do the measurements. A few years ago we lost a rather expensive thingy in outer space because some had been doing the calculations in inches (probably Americans) and everyone had been using metric. Still haven’t found it.
