My meeting with my ex and my teenage son to discuss his university choices went fairly well. He obviously kept telling him that he had to work harder and do loads more reading around the subject and generally get his head down. Personally, I thought he was working pretty hard already. We only had a couple of heated debates. One involved the discussion about why he wanted to go to a Northern university because the night life was so much better. His father was not impressed. I of course played the role of a naughty teenager, agreeing that nightlife was indeed one of the top priorities when choosing a suitable university. Which I admit isn’t very helpful or grown up of me.
The second was when my ex suggested that instead of medicine, he should maybe think about Theology. “Theology? What’s that?” asked my son. Having been informed about what it meant, he dismissed it as possibly the worst sort of course imaginable. Especially for someone that didn’t have a calling. I interjected suggesting that there seemed little point in spending three years studying something that he didn’t believe in. “It would be preferable to find a course entitled ‘Fairies At The Bottom Of The Garden'” I said. He was incensed. Oh well. I stand by what I said. I really would rather spend three years looking at the evidence as to whether fairies existed than whether God existed. But that’s just me.
We did however agree to get some work experience sorted out with my doctor brother ASAP so that he could decide if medicine is really for him.

January 27, 2010Northumbria and Newcastle are serious party places but also great academically! My son (only 14 thank god) has decided he might go to uni in England – because he can drink when he’s 18 instead of 21. Great eh? Although it would be so much cheaper I might just encourage him.

January 27, 2010Studying the evidence for finding fairies at the bottom of the garden could be quite interesting. At least the possibility of finding evidence of different types of fairies at the bottom of the garden won’t start a war. Compare that to the different types of religion and wars and I think you are on a winner! On second thoughts medicine might be best. At least it is useful.

January 28, 2010Oooo,now there’s a course I’d like to study! The fairy one, not the theology one. I even have an ‘end of my garden’ where I think they are. I could sit there all day, drinking tea, reading a book (quietly, waiting to spot one). Well… tea until about 11am. Then, of course, it’d be gin and tonic time. What’s the bet, I’d spot more fairies in the afternoon?
