A really good friend of mine works for World Vision and she has just told me about their urgent appeal for 5,000 new British sponsors to help children in the developing world. They desperately need 5,000 Britons to sponsor a child for just 60p a day. Through child sponsorship, World Vision focuses on improving the quality of life of children – helping to meet their education, health and other basic needs.
99% of the 9.2 million avoidable deaths of children under five occur in developing countries. A child in Sierra Leone is 43 times more likely than a British child to die between the ages of 0 and 5, while a child in Zambia is 27 times more likely to die before his or her fifth birthday than a child under 5 in the UK.
Sponsoring a child is one of the best ways in which people can make a difference in the developing world and what better way to prove that we as British mother’s who blog could unite in our efforts AND spread the word. It is actually a really good thing to do with your own children because it really shows them, from regular letters and reports what life is like for other children around the world.

June 9, 2009Good one Lulu. I would like to add that if you go to the web site, you can actually purchase things in honour of someone. So – if you're stuck for a birthday gift for the person who has everything, you can buy half a cow (seriously) for a village, in honour of your friend or family member. Your loved one will receive a card about this, and through World Vision, you will help a village. You can also purchase fishing kits, chickens, other animals, … the list goes on. I have done this several times at Xmas and my siblings were thrilled.

June 10, 2009great idead…although when you sit this side and see big fat shiny world vision (or any other aid oprganisation's for that matter) land cruisers speeding along…one can only wonder if these accessories are THAT neccessary…i'm just saying…x j

June 10, 2009fully support your call and wanted to say that they support all children irrespective of their race, gender, religion or DISABILITY. children with disabilities are often considered 'too difficult' for charities and NGOs to deal with in developing countries and are really the poorest of the poor. its thought that less than 2% of children with disabilities worldwide ever go to school or receive any education. World Vision has made a huge effort to include them in their work.
